What is the Schengen
zone?

The Schengen zone describes an area comprising 27 European countries,
where everyone can travel freely and anywhere to cross the borders of
member countries without having to go through border controls.

Is the Schengen area and the European Union the same?

Although most members of the Schengen area are also members of the European Union (EU), several EU countries are not members of the Schengen area. In addition, there are several members of the Schengen area that are not EU members. See the map above for the differences between the EU, Schengen and the rest of Europe.

What do I need to travel to the Schengen area?

Before you start planning your trip, you must contact the embassy or consulate of the country to which you are traveling and get more detailed information about the travel requirements related to your trip. You can so be sure that you will not miss anything and that you will be well prepared. The embassy or consulate will provide you detailed and updated information on visa requirements, procedures and requirements relating to your specific situation.
